Five mouth-watering campfire desserts

When you think of glamping recipes, your mind automatically goes to sausages, burgers and perhaps the odd toasted marshmallow. But next time, why not try something different? Part of the joy of glamping is the huge range of delicious dishes that you can whip up over your firepit or campfire. Crucially for anyone with a sweet tooth, you can also dish up some really delightful desserts for everyone to enjoy – perfect for sharing with friends and family around a flickering fire.

We’ve pulled together some of our favourite glamping recipes for mouth-watering campfire desserts. If you’ve got a hankering for something sweet, these are definitely worth cooking up!

Campfire Cones

These are a simple, gooey, tasty after-dinner treat that both big and small kids will love! They’re also great if you’d rather skip the need for skewers or roasting sticks.

Ingredients:

  • Waffle cones
  • Chocolate chips
  • Banana slices
  • Mini marshmallows
  • All of your other favourite chocolatey treats or chopped fruit!

As mentioned, these are perhaps one of the easiest campfire treats to make. All you have to do is stuff your cones with fillings, wrap them in foil (heavy duty stuff is best), and pop them on the hot coals for fire minutes. Take them out (carefully, they’ll be hot!) and unwrap them to enjoy a sweet, gooey treat.

The best thing about campfire cones is that everyone can have exactly what they want! Stuff your cone with whatever takes your fancy – fruit and chocolate is a classic combination, but caramel chocolates, nuts and coconut can all work well. The only limit is your imagination!

Why not gather the kids together in the afternoon to fill their cones with whatever they want.. that way they’ll be all ready for a sunset treat that evening!

Chocolate Orange Cakes

Another great recipe to try with the kids. Chocolate Orange Cakes are quick and easy to make and, look amazing – we dare you not to Instagram them (Don't forget to tag us on @lanternandlarks)! Most importantly, they taste delicious.

Ingredients;

  • Oranges – 1 per person
  • Instant chocolate cake mix

Slice the top of each orange at about a quarter of the way down, then hollow them out. Make up the cake mix – the kind where you add water is best for glamping, although you could also make your own at home and bring it with you.

Fill each hollow orange with the cake mix and pop the top back on. Wrap each one with foil and place them on the hot coals. The cooking time varies depending on how hot the fire is, but we’d recommend checking every 10 minutes.

Once unwrapped, you’ll have a lovely baked chocolate cake with a hint of orange flavour. The whole family will enjoy digging them out of the oranges… and there’s barely any washing up afterwards!

Barbequed Apple Crisp

This delicious dessert requires a little more prep, but it’s all worth it for the amazing moment when you unwrap those foil parcels! Full of gorgeous smells and colours, these would be perfect for an Autumnal glamping break… you could even get apples fresh from the tree!

Ingredients:

  • 170g old-fashioned oats
  • 6 tbsp flour
  • 3 tbsp packed brown sugar
  • 50g granulated sugar
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • Dash of nutmeg (optional)
  • 2 tbsp butter, plus some extra for the foil
  • 3 apples
  • Squeeze of lemon juice

Mix together your oats, flour, sugars, cinnamon and nutmeg. Cut in the butter until the mix becomes crumbly, then pop it in the fridge (or cool box!). Meanwhile, wash and slice the apples and add a dash of lemon juice on top.

For each dessert, cut a couple of squares of foil and lightly butter the middle of each piece. Place the apples on top of one of the pieces, then sprinkle with the crumble mixture. Cover with the second piece of foil (buttered side down) and fold into a well-sealed parcel.

Pop it onto the coals for 15-20 minutes, and you’re done! Let them sit for a minute or two before you open them – they’ll be really hot. Then grab a fork, perhaps some ice cream or cream, and dig in!

Campfire Banana Boats

A cross between a s’more and a banana split, these banana boats are a campfire classic. You can fill them however you like, but we think you can’t really go wrong with good old chocolate!

Ingredients:

  • Bananas
  • Fillings! Ideas include chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, strawberries, Nutella, chopped nuts and peanut butter.

Take a banana that’s still in its peel and cut it along the middle of the concave side, just until the tip of your knife touches the peel on the other side. Pull it slightly ajar and stuff it with your fillings (something melty, something sweet and something crunchy), in a single line down the centre of the banana. And try not to get carried away – a too-full banana boat can be difficult to wrap, and turn into a bit of a mess!

Once your banana is stuffed, wrap it in foil and bake it on the campfire. We’d recommend waiting until the fire dies down, so you can nestle it amongst the coals. It should only take a few minutes – you want a warm banana filled with melted toppings! Just unwrap and enjoy!

Baileys Dipped Marshmallows

Last but not least, something for the grown-ups to enjoy! This is a super quick treat which is easy to put together once the kids have gone to bed. Be warned though; you’ll struggle to go back to normal marshmallows after trying these.

Ingredients:

  • Marshmallows
  • Baileys

You’re probably ahead of us with this one; simply toast your marshmallows over the glowing coals, then dip them into a cup of Baileys! They’ll come out gooey and delicious – a perfect reward after an exciting day exploring the local area. Just remember to bring something to wipe your hands; they can get a bit messy!
